“Something great in itself”

parterre boxNow we have considered the three “winners” in the Tristan competition, let’s turn to the also-rans, or, to be more optimistic, the runners up. Many admirers of Dame Gwyneth Jones prize a 1993 Tristan from the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Being one of her admirers, I wish I could join. Götz Friedrich‘s then-13-year-old production has qualities in common with Wieland Wagner’s, but unlike that, it had drifted into vagueness and generalization by the time of the filming . Schwarz and Kollo return in their roles from the Ponnelle, but the years tell. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSVqbcFzFgk I find Jones difficult to enjoy here, not only because of vocal unsteadiness but because her performance has a predetermined, overemphatic, almost pedantic quality, like an Old Hollywood actress who has worked out every expression in the mirror beforehand and rigidly stayed the course. There is little spontaneity, life, or give-and-take with others, and I do not think it preserves her Isolde at its best. The Met’s 1999 production by Dieter Dorn, not a great one, was a step in the right direction after all the calendar-art Wagner that had held sway at that theater in the James Levine era. The aesthetic is abstract, spare yet luminous. Costuming has a hint of Kurosawa. At the time, Levine and some critics were very excited about Ben Heppner and Jane Eaglen in the title roles. Neither seems to me, as captured here, the kind of performer a static, minimalist production needs; one’s attention wanders from Eaglen in particular. The one performer who is exactly what it needs is René Pape, whose early Marke is a reminder that he can or could be a compelling storyteller when so motivated. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRRhBPa4hUc Levine wraps Wagner’s score and the listener in sweaty bear-hugs that go on for quite some time. If you are a parterre reader, you probably know by now whether you will want to savor the embrace or wriggle free. The Met’s orchestra was indisputably a wonder by the 1990s. I must skip several other Tristans of greater and lesser interest (a Nilsson/Jon Vickers Orange performance that is valuable for existing at all but calls for great tolerance; another with Vickers in Montreal; productions by Alfred Kirchner, Olivier Py, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Christoph Marthaler). I will confront a recent release, the 2015 Bayreuth production. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9y65GIto4Q Katharina Wagner is not yet 40, and fairness precludes me from making a final judgment on her as a director . Perhaps everything we have had will one day be seen as early work in which she found her way. However, watching her Tristan not long after I watched her uncle’s, my impression was that the theatrical gifts she inherited were Papa Wolfgang’s–a more modest bequest. She shows signs of being to Regietheater Wagner what he was to “traditional” Wagner. Her idea of Tristan and Isolde as prisoners of a sadistic despot, evading searchlights in a prison compound to steal time together, might be playable and interesting if it had an ounce of human feeling in it, rather than a tiresome fetishization of the bleak. It is all so drearily secondhand, this inky ragbag: the characters cutting themselves and smearing blood, the coal-mine lighting (the top-flight Reinhard Traub, surely giving the lady what she wants), Tristan’s kitschy visions of a phantom Isolde… who removes her own head, but never mind. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzL8cmq4K8U A viewer may feel elevated in knuckling under, in being conned. It is so dark, so grim, so “unsparing.” To reject it, to want its four hours to end, must be a sign of personal timidity to be confronted and overcome, right? I do not think so. Tristan und Isolde itself opens up many avenues to get us to care, rather than to endure. Frau Wagner drives us down the first dead end. This is emptiness competently achieved. If you watch it anyway, you will hear spectacular conducting from Christian Thielemann, who needs fear no comparison to the living or the dead in this score. There is an inspired and electric Isolde, in very rough voice, from Evelyn Herlitzius. Georg Zeppenfeld gets everything possible out of this Marke, ambling around in hat and fur with relaxed menace, a pimp crossed with the lead bounty hunter in McCabe & Mrs. Miller. But unlike Tristan and Isolde, we need not be detained. There is always a chance that the next dream will be better. The Met’s cast, conductor, and director for its new Tristan hold great promise, and the production has stirred excitement overseas. I look forward to its Met Live in HD showing. Of course, there are the dreams we have when we are asleep and the dreams (the aspirations) we have when we are awake. The latter keep opera alive. A young woman I know saw the film of Traviata and knew by the time it was over that she wanted to become an opera singer, not any other kind of singer. She is coming along well. You may see her one day as Isolde. Such roles–Salome, the Dyer’s Wife, Isolde–are where she is told she will end up. Diana Damrau, interestingly, has talked of having the same experience, being 12 years old and seeing Teresa Stratas singing and acting in that film. “That is the way I actually wanted to find out if I could do this myself as well, with my voice, with my body. I prayed to God, please, hopefully I’ve got some talent to try to do this one day.” Not among tenors in our survey was the South African Johan Botha, who died on 8 September. I have thought of him often in the days since the news broke. He too had a dream that began with Traviata; he obsessively played the Moffo/Tucker LPs when he was five. Some time before his cancer was diagnosed, Botha gave an interview in a German-language publication, and he was excited about his first Tristan in 2017 with Barenboim in Berlin. It takes years to learn such a role, he said. He talked of studying the whole score, the whole text, not only his part. He was dyslexic, and made notes and little drawings in his scores to help him internalize. That Tristan is not an assumption we will hear now. I think such things (“If only So-and-So had lived to sing/record/direct/write…”), and then I remind myself not to think of these people only as existing to do their work and give enjoyment, or fail to give enjoyment, to the likes of me. The greatest regret is that a 51-year-old man suffered and died, not that a 52-year-old man could not pretend onstage to suffer and die. Botha might have happily parted with his dream of singing Tristan to have another year with his wife, his two sons, and his model railroads. There will be other Tristans to hear, of course. Some of them will be great. Maybe Stuart Skelton will be one of them. The great performances discussed here are products of the things Wagner mentioned in his letter, dreams and love. So are some bad performances. Those of us who write about performances or just attend them wait for the next great one, and much of what we see and hear falls short. You may find yourself sitting next to someone who goes into a state of bliss at everything put in front of her. Everything is the best production, with the best singers ever, the best conductor. On your other side may be someone at the opposite extreme. In the grip of the cataractous nostalgia that passes for discernment in his circle, he has seen nothing worthwhile since 1970. He still shows up, just to make his disapproval known. Both of those people deserve understanding. They are at points on their journeys. The goal is to learn, to examine, to question, to reconsider, to arrive at standards without prejudices…and still to believe. Maybe at first you were bowled over by everything you saw and heard, and then as the years went by it became one in four times, then one in 12 times, then only a few times a year. But whatever the next thing is, it could be one of those times. That is the dream, anyway. I close with Waltraud Meier, now yielding to time and setting aside her great roles. She was talking about the responsibilities of the interpreter, but I think these are useful words for an audience member too: “The only distance should be what allows you to see the essence. Anything else is cowardice in the face of a great art. Maybe sometimes you must endure discomfort. Or just the opposite, you can see something great in itself. And when you have recognized this, you do not want to deny yourself the same again.”

Così fan tutte musical highlight: ‘Come scoglio’

Photograph by Stephen Cummiskey ‘Come scoglio’ is an aria from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ’s 1790 opera Così fan tutte , ossia La scuola degli amanti. It takes place in Act I and is sung by Fiordiligi, a young woman who is unwittingly participating in the ‘school for lovers’ of the opera’s subtitle. Like much of Mozart’s writing for this character, the aria covers an unusually wide range and mixes together forceful, held sections with heavily ornamented passages, requiring a voice that brings together agility and power. The aria is designed to impress (which it certainly does) but it also has an element of parody, as Mozart mimics and mocks the opera conventions of his time – a thread that runs throughout Così fan tutte. Where does it take place in the opera? ‘Come scoglio’ occurs at the end of Act I scene 11. The opera opens in the midst of an argument between the young men Ferrando and Guglielmo and the older Don Alfonso. Alfonso claims that no woman can be faithful; the young men hotly contest that their girlfriends – Dorabella and Fiordiligi, respectively – are as faithful as they are beautiful. The men agree to put their loves to the test, and pretend to go to war, only to return, disguised, to woo the women as strangers. The women are devastated by their fiancés’ departure. Their maid Despina recommends they use this opportunity to take a lover – and lo and behold, the disguised Ferrando and Guglielmo appear. Fiordiligi, sternly resistant to their advances, sings ‘Come scoglio’ (like a rock). But as the opera goes on even she will yield. What do the lyrics mean? Read our line-by-line translation of librettist Lorenzo da Ponte ’s original Italian text, created in 2016 by musicologist Roger Parker: Recitative: ‘Temerari, sortite’ Temerari, sortite Fuori di questo loco, e non profani L’alito infausto degli infami detti Nostro cor, nostro orecchio e nostri affetti! Aria: ‘Come scoglio’ Come scoglio immoto resta Contro i venti e la tempesta, Così ognor quest’alma è forte Nella fede e nell’amor. Within us burns a fire that strengthens and consoles. Death alone will change the feelings in our hearts. Respect my constancy, you ignoble souls. Never again let vile expectations make you so bold. What makes the music so memorable? Fiordiligi is a force to be reckoned with, as ‘Come scoglio’ makes more than clear. Unlike Dorabella, who seems to take to infidelity quite happily, Fiordiligi will wrestle with strong emotions that tear her between her two loves. The determined leaps and resolute rhythms in ‘Come scoglio’ are crucial in establishing this character. Yet Mozart doesn’t seem to take Fiordiligi quite as seriously as she does. There is more than a hint of parody in ‘Come scoglio’ – the leaps are so huge, the range so large and the ornamentation on the repeated first stanza thickly florid. Fiordiligi dominates the music to an absurd extent, even at one point singing the bass line. So the aria serves a straightforward function, of delineating the character and moving the story forwards – but it also, like so much of the music in Così fan tutte, provides a further commentary on the characters and their emotions, an extra level that can provide a deeper insight. Così fan tutte’s other musical highlights Mozart's third collaboration with Lorenzo Da Ponte sees the composer lavish miniature masterpieces on pretty much every scene. Despina and the four lovers all receive at least one stand-out aria: Ferrando’s ‘Un’aura amorosa’, Guglielmo’s ‘Donne mie la fate’, Dorabella’s ‘È amore un ladroncello’, Despina’s ‘In uomini’ – the list could go on. An unusual proportion of the music, though, is constructed in duets and ensembles, all ingeniously formed: there’s the terzetto ‘Soave sia il vento’, probably the opera’s most well-known number, but also many gems besides, including the opening trio between the three men, the brilliant Act I finale, Dorabella and Guglielmo’s seduction duet ‘Il core vi dono’ and the rapturous multi-movement duet between Fiordiligi and Ferrando, ‘Fra gli amplessi’. As ever with Mozart, taken as a whole the entire opera is constructed in a highly sophisticated manner, the pace of numbers and the use of recitative all coming together to impart nuanced and compelling characterization to all of the cast. Classic recordings Fortunately, the world is not short on excellent Così recordings, so you’re in with a good chance of finding the one that suits you perfectly. Broadly speaking, the range spans from classic recordings with big voices and slow tempos (probably the most famous being Karl Böhm ’s 1962 recording with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as Fiordiligi) to recordings by period-instrument bands at fleeter speeds and with lighter voices (such as René Jacobs ’s with Véronique Gens as Fiordiligi) – with everything in between. Particular recordings to look out for include Daniel Barenboim ’s recording with Lella Cuberli as Fiordiligi, Yannick Nézet-Séguin ’s with Miah Persson and Teodor Currentzis ’s with Simone Kermes . More to discover The obvious next step is Mozart’s other operas – from Mitridate, re di Ponto (written when he was just 14 through to La clemenza di Tito , via Lucio Silla , La finta giardiniera , Idomeneo , Le nozze di Figaro , Don Giovanni and Die Zauberflöte , there is so much to enjoy from this opera master. If you’re looking for even more Mozart with a particular accent on virtuoso soprano writing then try his Mass in C minor as well. Where to go next? Fiordiligi has cousins in the strong-willed Leonore in Beethoven ’s Fidelio , and in many of Verdi ’s heroines, including Violetta from La traviata , Hélène from Les Vêpres siciliennes and Elisabetta from Don Carlo – or for strong female characters whose music is written with more than a hint of a smile try Rosina in Rossini ’s Il barbiere di Siviglia or Adina in Donizetti ’s L’elisir d’amore . Don Giovanni - The Birth of Romantic Opera

That tragic, distressing D Minor which opens this immortal masterpiece projects us towards its most poignant scene, the hair-raising entrance of the Convitato di pietra, with its Wagnerian foreshadowing, and unsettling dramatic novelty. Mozart's most compelling operatic effort is here offered in many favourite recordings of mine, followed by a handful of great releases of other popular titles, including my absolute favourite Clemenza di Tito - the composer's final accomplishment for the theatre... Wunderbare Träume

Yesterday we pondered two videos of Tristan und Isolde from the 20th century. Now let us move on to a performance that is definitively of the 21st. Patrice Chéreau, the humanist in provocateur’s clothing, returned to Wagner in 2007 at La Scala with Daniel Barenboim and Waltraud Meier. The three had first collaborated, memorably, on Berg’s Wozzeck more than a decade earlier. In all of Chéreau’s work in opera, but more than ever in the work completed in the last decade of his life (Così fan tutte, From the House of the Dead, Tristan, Elektra), there is an urgent humanity about familiar characters. These are not myths or archetypes, not superpeople. They are plausible and volatile human beings bearing up under extreme circumstances. When it works, as I believe it usually did, you may ask: is anything grander than that? //www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGy3tWPMx4g In this production , the dream is in the middle of the opera: two people at last alone. The outer acts are set in squalid realism. There are more people laboring away on the ship in the first act than we typically see, busy with their own concerns, stories concealed from us, paying no mind to Isolde and Brangäne. Again in the third act, we see more people around Tristan than are absolutely necessary. The director’s usual designer, Richard Peduzzi, does characteristic work with utilitarian settings that loom over the characters, creating a stark environment against which principals stand out. Waltraud Meier’s Isolde here, her third and last on video, is one of the greatest filmed performances I have seen in an opera. The voice is what it is, a lifted mezzo that had dared Isolde for 14 years and was inevitably showing some wear. It is in good shape for the date, but you can hear bigger voices, easier voices, more beautiful voices in this music. On a sound-only recording, there would still be much to praise in the musical technique, the way she makes the strengths and weaknesses alike work for her (a slightly sour or tangy quality to the lower middle is useful to color sarcasm), the impressive textual specificity, the obvious care for and perceptive handling of language and music. But it is the total performance that is worth considering in this visual document: the voice, the face, the eyes, the disciplined and meaningful use of the body, the ravaged glamour and charisma of a great screen actress. The first word that comes to mind to sum up what she provides is “command.” And the second, even more important, is “love.” This intelligent, opinionated artist was in something that brought together three men it would not be hyperbole to call the artistic loves of her life: her favorite director, the conductor with whom she was most closely associated, and the composer she has said she wishes she had another lifetime to explore. She gives the impression of going after an ultimate statement on Isolde as she understands Isolde, with enough voice left to do it and in conditions that made it attainable. She achieved that, and the cameras were there. Meier’s lioness-in-winter turn at the center gives the rest of the cast a challenge to meet. Only Salminen, back as Marke, was in 2007 a Wagnerian of comparable stature, and his voice is drier and more restricted in dynamics and color than it had been 24 years earlier. This is an angrier Marke than the one for Ponnelle. He stalks about like a wounded bear and shoves Melot around, but we sense sorrow and loss along with the seething. Durham-born Ian Storey‘s voice, good-sized but pale and starchy, may not be anyone’s dream instrument for Tristan, and he can be seen glancing at the conductor a few times. He holds his own and has some rough-hewn magnetism. Michelle DeYoung, younger than the Isolde, convincingly embodies Chéreau’s interesting idea of Brangäne as surrogate mother figure, with thinning hair and a stoop. Gerd Grochowski supplies rude, blotchy life as Kurwenal. In general the supporting characters are better considered than they usually are, including Melot (Will Hartmann, pursuing the whiny option). Barenboim’s conducting this time is more evocative, with a languorous mystery to the prelude, as if the curtain is being pulled back on long-ago, secret things. Much of the performance suggests, in the way scenes are built and shaped, remembrances coming into sharper focus. The Scala orchestra’s sound is rich and mellow. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGkzbIwEHnQ Of (Waltraud) Meier’s two prior filmed Isoldes, the 1998 Munich is the more interesting and the more strongly cast. She was in firmer voice than in 2007, and had been able to explore the role more fully than in 1995. Director Peter Konwitschny does much that may impress as strange and perverse, but he can never be easily dismissed in German repertoire. It is obviously the work of a real director with insights into what he is staging. Things linger in the memory: the childhood slideshow accompanying Tristan’s sickbed reverie. Isolde’s moment of hesitation near the end as she closes the red curtain on the mourning Marke and Brangäne, understanding their grief but removed from it, no longer of their world, like a spectral visitor to her own funeral. Kurt Moll‘s frail, kindly, yet very dignified Marke. Meier’s first Isolde, in Heiner Müller‘s 1993 Bayreuth production as taped two summers later, might seem more valuable if her Munich and Milan ones did not exist. Müller, for all his accomplishments as a creative artist, was not a director on the level of the four aforementioned, nor as conversant with the medium of opera. He was pursuing a tone of restraint and alienation, but lacked the means to enliven scenes, which tend to sag. Coming to this after any of the performances previously discussed, one may find it undercooked, plain. There is honest and often moving work from the veteran Siegfried Jerusalem as Tristan, but everything else that is worth having can be had better elsewhere. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CNBIJj1CFM

I saw three ships

“Never in my life having enjoyed the true happiness of love I shall erect a memorial to this loveliest of all dreams in which, from the first to the last, love shall, for once, find utter repletion. I have devised in my mind a Tristan und Isolde, the simplest, yet most full-blooded musical conception imaginable, and with the ‘black flag’ that waves at the end I shall cover myself over–to die.” Richard Wagner wrote the above in an 1854 letter to Franz Liszt, who was to become his father-in-law in 1870. In between, his revolutionary music drama had its 1865 world premiere, conducted by Cosima’s then-husband, Hans von Bülow. Richard and Cosima had been carrying on their affair for some time, and it was no mystery to the conductor. The true happiness of love may be the loveliest of all dreams, but, we are reminded, it is not always the simplest. Our Own JJ reminded me of Wagner’s quotation a few weeks ago when answering someone’s question about which Tristan DVD best reflects the composer’s intentions. Perhaps to head off a séance, JJ suggested that a good Tristan production in the time of cameras and recording equipment would not necessarily be one that looked like what the Munich audience saw a century and a half ago. Rather, it would be dreamlike, full-blooded, simple. In the time of complete filmed Tristans, different directors, conductors, and casts have given us many approaches, some fitting that description and others not. These interpreters’ dreams have been overlaid on Wagner’s. The discussion provoked me, rather impulsively and with an eye on the calendar for the Met’s new opening-night production, to look at and consider some of what is available, and to share those thoughts. I shall say in advance, with regret but no small relief, that this will not be a comprehensive survey such as we presented in April for Strauss’s Elektra. There are about twice as many Tristan DVDs as there are Elektra DVDs, and Tristan is a work twice as long. Therefore, I have chosen three that I consider essential viewing with elements of greatness (nothing of human endeavor being perfect, including Tristan itself), and then I will touch on a few runners-up and also-rans. If your favorite filmed Tristan has been slighted or left off entirely, I encourage you to share that in followup. But in the words of great songwriters of a more recent era, this time the dream’s on me. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkpd2_hSgoU The 1962 Bayreuth production of Wieland Wagner was filmed in Osaka in 1967, not long after the director’s death, and has been intermittently available since VHS days. To see it today is to be challenged on notions about the days of “stand and sing” and the dramatic abilities of singers in an earlier era. Often, how we respond to what we see and hear is colored by expectations that can be too high or too low. It is possible that someone else would bypass this black-and-white film with “acceptable” sound and picture on technical grounds alone. When I eventually saw it, it exceeded my expectations in every way. How much care went into this tour staging, how the result compares to what audiences had seen in Bayreuth five years earlier, it is impossible for me to say. What is clear is that even though this production is older than those storybook Met Wagner stagings of the 1970s through 1990s, it looks more modern. The vision of a great theatrical mind is still there to be appreciated, with a cast well acquainted with his work generally, and this production specifically. As most of Wieland’s influential productions of his grandfather’s operas exist only in photographs and memories, and more of the people who attended them leave us every year, it is an important record. It is the theatrical equivalent of a scratchy late-career recording by some fabled singer in early gramophone days. The effect of Wieland’s production is of grandeur achieved through austerity. Even with the somewhat murky image quality, one sees sophisticated use of space and expressionistic lighting, eloquence in blocking and gesture. There is a 1960s time-stamping to peripheral elements such as the wigs, makeup, and lines of the costumes, but broadly speaking it is timeless. Settings are suggestive rather than elaborate, and movements of the performers economical yet purposeful. A friend pointed out that the people on the stage seem “invisibly connected.” Every scene has a grip and charge to it. In any era, we rarely see this. The film provides an opportunity to hear and see Birgit Nilsson in her prime in one of her great roles. There are no surprises in what she sounds like. The huge, focused voice gleams and soars, and there is commendable attention to dynamics. There is a complementary assurance in stage responsibilities, a lot of charisma with it, and (surprise?) good acting in close-up. I have always felt that something was lost when Nilsson took her roles into recording studios. She was a singer to be experienced on the stage, if one could, and I consistently find her surviving live recordings and broadcasts of greater interest. This one is a strong example. Wolfgang Windgassen‘s vocal endowment was not of such legendary dimensions, but one appreciates him more in retrospect. Today he seems a template for many “lyrical” Tristans who would follow, and he is more effective within his means than most. His rhythmic accuracy and sensitive phrasing reward close attention. He and his Isolde are very comfortable with each other. The others are a good group, and Hans Hotter brings the bottomless sadness of a great stage tragedian to Marke. Pierre Boulez conducts the Osaka orchestra, and while he was not all the way there to being the polarizing Wagnerian we know from the Parsifal recording and the Centenary Ring, there are his hallmarks of clarity, transparency and speed: this runs three and a half hours. Nilsson did not approve (“It was almost as though this French conductor had never opened the orchestra score […] It was the only time I was happy Wieland was not present”). My own view is mellower; I find his an intriguing maverick interpretation. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPc0lHsTWhE Operagoers and opera producers often are at odds these days on the quality of beauty. A certain kind of operagoer would like almost anything, regardless of subject matter, to have “a beautiful production.” This usually means something visually stimulating in the sense of being colorful, painterly, and expensive-looking: pretty pictures to applaud. Earlier, I used the descriptor “storybook” with a note of disapproval, but Jean-Pierre Ponnelle‘s 1982 Bayreuth production, filmed in 1983, is a reminder that a beautiful production can also be a dramatic and imaginative one, and a great one. Ponnelle is almost 30 years dead now, and long ago was admitted to the pantheon. This means he can be used as a club with which to beat those who followed him. One sees his name invoked as someone who respected the composers and did it the right way. I am sure he did respect the composers, but in Tristan and elsewhere, he took risks and liberties. Some paid off; others did not. The way Isolde returns in the final act and what it is made to mean are departures from Wagner’s libretto, but defensible ones. Ponnelle heard and responded to that music’s consoling quality. This Tristan is the “romantic” choice, with attractive people in lovely, dreamlike settings. The first act gives us a huge white diaphanous sail, the two women below it, Tristan and his men visible through fabric above. Isolde is literally weighed down by her enormous cape. A crown is perched on her head; it falls off near the end of the act. In the second act, there is a vast spreading tree within a forest that can be dark and ominous or magically glowing and bright with changes in music. The third act is a barren outcrop with another tree, this one dead. Johanna Meier blows gentler breezes than Nilsson’s gales in the prior performance. Hers is an ethereal, very vulnerable Isolde, every inch the princess both in regal bearing and the sense of someone who has been sheltered and begins the drama lost and beset. She is expressive of face and voice and meets the music on her terms, without attempting to force a larger sound than she has. Sheen compensates for what is absent in heft, and she makes a trim, agile figure on the stage. So does her partner, the handsome René Kollo, whose tone in 1983 still had much of the sweetness one heard in his early Stolzings and Lohengrins. Meier is the better actor of the two, but Kollo’s agonies in the third act are well guided by Ponnelle, and the tenor gives a good accounting in them. An indelible image: these lovers staring at their reflection together in the pan from which they have drunk the potion. Of the others, I must mention Hanna Schwarz, one of the best Brangänes of my experience, not only for the intelligence with which she handles her music and text but for her sympathetic and alert presence as confidant. Matti Salminen is in prime, plush voice as Marke, very clear in enunciation, still and affecting in restraint. Conductor Daniel Barenboim, a then-recent Bayreuth debutant, had only begun his exploration of this score. For good and ill, it sounds like the work of someone who had started as an instrumental soloist. Later he would know more about working with and supporting singers in Wagner operas. An English critic might call it “wilful.” Tomorrow: the third ship, plus more vehicles for its Isolde.
